New research indicates that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
