Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
